Have you actually ever been to a Texas Benefits/Social Services office? Well let me tell you, I've been there once upon a time, quite a few years ago and it was a very unpleasant experience. As you pull up to the office, you see that there are absolutely no parking spaces anywhere because all of the available parking is already occupied by BMW's, Mercedes, Range Rovers, etc. (all which might I add have dark tinted windows and huge flashy rims on them) As I parked my 2003 Nissan Maxima a block down the street and made my way into the building, I noticed that this placed was packed with people, and there was hardly any room for me to make my way inside. You had to take a number and stand around waiting for a seat to clear. Once seated, I took a look around at my surroundings. There were a lot of large families with 4 - 6 children a piece, a lot of young guys on their cell phones making drug deals and a few solo people who look like they had came straight from a trap house. And to be 100% honest, I was the only caucasion besides one of the women who was working there. It took several hours for someone to finally see me. It was a very long process and once my interview was over, they said they were denying me because if anything, I could always sell my car to support myself. I walked out of the TANF office furious with rage. How were all of these people in there getting away with what they were doing, and getting over on the system? How could they deny me and let everyone else walk out with free Medicaid and a food stamp card? My short lived struggles were only very temporary and 2 weeks later I was already back on my feet making my ends meet. From time to time I would still encounter someone who was getting free government aid who did not need it and definately did not deserve it. Why were we paying taxes to help out some lazy motherfucker that didnt have a legal tax deductable job, but made thousands of dollars in cash every week from selling drugs or taking it from some dumb ass stripper? And what about these hoes who keep popping out 5 or 6 kids when they couldnt even afford the first one?
This has been a very touchy subject that I have been trying to deal with for years now, until today!
The Texas Senate approved a bill to begin drug testing welfare recipients. Applicants must now undergo a drug screening before they can become qualified for services. Persons with felony drug convictions are to be mandatory tested. Children will continue to receive benefits no matter how many drug tests a parent fails. This bill creates a “protective payee” so that a grandparent or other relative, would receive the child’s welfare benefits to ensure that the money goes to food, clothing, housing and other needs.
Guess who's laughing all the way to the bank now...?
